Ways to Get Rid of Headaches and Migraines

Ways to Get Rid of Headaches and Migraines

The only thing worse than a pounding headache is a migraine. Both suck. When they strike, there are some things you can do that could get rid of them or at least make them a little easier to deal with. Today, I want to share those with you.

All of these revolve around relaxation in some way, because that’s the real key to headaches and migraine relief. You can’t get rid of them with a coffee from Starbucks and more work.

Deep Breathing

This one can work great. Basically, here’s how to do it. It’s just like working a balloon. Picture a point below your navel and take in a bunch of air. Hold for a second then start to exhale slowly. As you do it, your body should relax.

It’s important to try and block out any distractions while doing this. Don’t do it while working at the same time.

Relaxing Music

One of the that helps me is soothing music. It’s important that the music have no words (that’s just more stuff for your brain to process). I usually like running streams, thunderstorms, etc. In fact, I’ve got a huge collection in iTunes and on my iPod ready to go.

Turn on the music low enough to hear it and if possible try the deep breathing or just relax. Ideally, you can get to a place that has less light. If not, sometimes something over your eyes or head, like a coat, sheet, etc can help.

Visualization

Really, all of these things work well together. Try to get everything out of your mind for a little bit and just visualize something peaceful-a beach, running stream, you sleeping, whatever.

Don’t over think here. Just a nice casual visualization will do.…

How To Get Tension Headache Relief In Simple Steps

How To Get Tension Headache Relief In Simple Steps

There are many causes of tension headaches, from stress at home or work, weather changes, muscle tension from lifting or carrying heavy objects or even sinus congestion. Tension headache relief is possible if you learn to change how your body reacts to these stresses, which you can also do at home.

A tension type headache may vary in severity from mild to excruciating. The most common are those that have a dull ache that may start at the neck, and travel over your head to the front and temples. The pain may cover your entire head and make you feel tired and rundown. There are no long term effects from your headache, but in the short term you feel plain rotten.

There are many techniques you can use for tension headache relief, from massage, chiropractic, acupressure and acupuncture, herbs and even medication. But to get long lasting relief you need to address the underlying cause.

Most treatments for tension type headaches target muscular tension, as this is the final process causing your head pain. But finding the reason behind the muscle tension is better for long term success. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ease the tight muscles causing your pain, but do this in conjunction with removing the cause too.

Some of the common underlying causes relate to dehydration, the ability to cope with stress and even fatigue. This doesn’t mean you need to look at counseling, but you do need to learn simple ways to help reduce your stress levels.

Dehydration is also a common cause, but it is not related just to how much water you drink, but how well your body processes water. If you fail to process water well, you can still be dehydrated even if you drink liters of water every day.

Tension headaches are common; in fact they are increasing in frequency as our society increases in stress. But to cure a tension type headache doesn’t need to be difficult. All you need to do is identify the cause, eliminate the symptoms and then make sure you remove all the causes.

You can get tension headache relief at home easily, these are a common form of headache that is easily remedied using techniques at home. A few minutes is all you need to fix your headache once and for all.…

Your Headache May Be Coming From Your Neck, Not Your Sinuses

Your Headache May Be Coming From Your Neck, Not Your Sinuses

Many people suffer from what are believed to be sinus headaches. These are the headaches that cause discomfort and hurt over the front of the face and forehead. Some people even get sinus infections which it is felt, lead to sinus headaches. Surprisingly however, a recent study from November 2011 begs to differ. Researchers had 58 patients who clearly seemed to have sinusitis, which is a sinus irritation, examined by specialists including a neurologist and an ear, nose and throat specialist, called an otolaryngologist. The examination found that only 3 of the patients had a sinus problem. The remaining 55 did not have a sinus condition but were instead suffering from migraine and tension-type headaches.

This, of course, means that many people having headaches are being misdiagnosed and consequently treated inappropriately with antibiotics and possibly with sinus surgery. It is commonly known that antibiotic therapy has side effects: stomach and intestinal irritation, nausea and if one is allergic antibiotics, a potentially life-threatening condition called anaphylactic shock. Also it has been recommended that antibiotics only be prescribed if, and only if, there is a confirmed bacterial infection. This is mainly because it has been found that bacteria are progressively becoming immune to our common antibiotics. If this trend continues, the day may come when we are unable to treat bacterial infections effectively with any medication. None of us want to return to a world where one has to be gravely worried over a small skin cut or scrape. Sinus surgery has the potential risks of complications of anesthesia and operation-caused infections.

If migraine and tension headaches are the true source of the headaches, what is to be done in the way of treatment?

Fortunately a wise choice in the treatment of headaches is chiropractic care. One research publication released in 2010 found that both migraine and tension-type headaches actually come from irritated areas in the upper bones of the neck, called vertebrae, which can irritate nerves and joints which is where the headaches originate. By using various forms of gentle, safe manipulation, chiropractic treatment is also a very cost-effective approach to helping this disabling condition. Chiropractors in the United States are licensed and regulated by the state in with they practice and take on going continuing education classes.

Instead of possible inappropriate treatment of antibiotics or surgery for sinus headaches, the treatment of choice has been found to be best performed by doctors of chiropractic.…

Headaches, Migraine and Student Life

Headaches, Migraine and Student Life

Life’s full of stresses and exams top the lot. Do you find yourself with pounding in your temples, a steel cap three times too small for you or that ice-pick-through-the-eye-feeling?

Late nights, lost weekends, irregular meals (and alcohol and fast food!!) are all central to student life. They contribute a physical component to the emotional stress of performing on call (which the whole world seems to be asking you to do.)

If headache strikes, rest, re-hydration and a slow-release blood-sugar boost are what you need. Migraine or other severe headache may make those seem impossible. They’re not – but many aspects of life do get a little bent out of shape around exam time.

1) Get something light into your stomach like bread or rice (not fried rice from the Chinese takeaway, though boiled or steamed is fine.) Make sure you keep taking plenty of water. Something cold like fruit, a smoothie or some sorbet/sherbet might be good to have on hand.

2) Rest if you possibly can. Taking a bath in a darkened room for twenty minutes works wonders.

3) If you’re happy to, take a couple of dispersible aspirin, Tylenol or paracetemol… but don’t take these, or ibuprofen, on an empty stomach. Alcohol depletes your vitamin C levels, too. You may want to avoid orange juice if you’ve been partying/studying all night but fizzy vitamin C can be comforting “the morning after” if your stomach can take it. Some preparations like Berocca and Alka-Seltzer contain both a mild painkiller and a vitamin boost, often with caffeine. But if you take caffeine, you won’t be able to rest, so beware… and do read the label.

4) If you’d rather avoid painkillers, try some yoga. Loosen the spine with gentle head and neck rolls, then follow with the cat, downward-facing dog, and the child poses. Finish in the pose of total relaxation.

5) BREATHE. Most of us have little idea about how much our breathing affects everything else we do and feel. Many meditation traditions teach breathing techniques to help you achieve emotional stability (enlightenment, even!) So if you’re feeling anxious or vulnerable, breathing deeply and slowly helps, even without any training. Do breathe out as well as in so you don’t hyperventilate.

Headache is a sign that you’re not maintaining your body quite as you need to. It’s feedback, that’s all, a sign you need to take note.

If your headaches are chronic – you’re getting them at other times besides exams or they’re becoming a feature of your life – you’ll need a bit more help to sort out why and what you can do about it. Repeating or lasting headaches can indicate other health issues or relate to the way we’ve learned (or haven’t learned!) to look after ourselves.

Re-education can put most of that behind you. Depending on what you value and how you want to live your life, there’s lots of help to be found on the Internet and elsewhere. Spending a little time NOW to find out how best to treat your headaches is an investment in your future.

Meanwhile – bye for now; and best of luck with your exams.
